On February 12, 2024, an event at Tonbridge School took place. India’s Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh unveiled the statue of India’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) late General Bipin Rawat. The memorable event inspired and motivated future generations around the country. The defence minister recalled an incident where General Bipin Rawat was shot at a remote border post in Jammu and Kashmir and at that very moment he decided to enhance the operational efficiency of the Indian Army near the Line of Control and Line of Actual Control when he was the army chief. The decision was to make sure that no other soldier goes through the same during war.

Rajnath Singh said, “Even in his last moments, he was on duty, serving the nation. His commitment, dedication and patriotism could be felt until the very end which signifies the true meaning of ‘Die with your boots on’,”.

After inaugurating the statue of Bipin Rawat at the Tons Bridge School, Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh said, “The demise of Gen Rawat is an irreparable loss to the nation. Even in his last moments, he was on duty, serving the nation. His commitment, dedication, and patriotism could be felt until the very end,". He praised the late Bipin for being the first Indian Chief of Defence Staff.

Rajnath Singh further added on installing General Rawat’s statue, highlighting the significance of educating kids about the armed forces and bravery. He believed that seeing statues around was inspiring for the people. Rajnath Singh further mentioned our national leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and former President APJ Abdul Kalam and encouraged kids to take inspiration from them and create their own stories.

Bipin Rawat was born in Pauri, Uttarakhand on March 16, 1958, and was a distinguished soldier who graduated from the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the Indian Military Academy (IMA). He was appointed to the Indian Army in December 1978 and he served in the fifth battalion of the 11 Gorkha Rifles.

Bipin Rawat was India’s first Chief of defence Staff. He was given a wide range of important roles which included Brigade, Commander and General.

Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-C) Southern Command, Colonel Military Secretary, Senior Instructor in the Junior Command Wing etc. He was a crucial planner for the 2016 Surgical Strikes where the Indian Army went across the Line of Control into Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Bipin Rawat was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal, Yudh Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, and Sena Medal.

On 8 December 2021, an unfortunate tragedy occurred in which Gen. Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and twelve other military personnel lost their lives in a helicopter crash near Conoor in Tamil Nadu.
